Homework for tomorrow + Friday: Press review activity, as usual (see previous entry). Writing for Friday: Finish the writing activity p 14-15 (if you haven't done exercise 1, do it and self correct p122) as a preparatory task for the following essay:

You have participated in a debate on whether or not to legalize Marijuana in Spain and have decided to write an essay to express your opinion in writing. 220-260 words.

Use 2 of the following approaches on the topic:

Public health

Individual freedom

Tax revenues for the State

Here are some of the ideas expressed during the debate:

- Legalising marijuana would

- ..."allow drug use and addiction (by no means the same thing) to be treated as the public-health issues they are" and thus impose quality controls and regulations.
- ...encourage people to consume harder drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

- ...enable the State to use the money collected through taxes on its consumption for educational or cultural purposes.

You may if you wish make use of these opinions but you should use your own words as far as possible.

Here is a selection of more articles on the topic.

Friday, July 10

Hi everybody and welcome to your blog for the duration of this course :)

What we covered in class today: Course introduction + 3-stage activity -including a debate- based on an article by The Economist.

Homework for tomorrow: Watch this video. Choose any article from the following sources: The Economist, The Guardian, The Independent, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post and write down the main ideas of the article and why you liked/disliked it. You will have to do this every day for the duration of the course (on top of any other homework exercise you might be given) since we will begin every class with a 10-min press review.

Have a nice weekend :)
